In this newsletter: Farm Forestry Timbers has been mostly inactive as a result of me dedicating my efforts into building standards with the goal of these being more inclusive of "alternative" species to treated radiata pine. Two of the three standards I've worked on to create a more level playing field have failed. Consensus was not reached in those committees, made up mostly of corporate wood processing interests. I'd never dreamed of how strong those interests would be in pursuit of retaining the advantage they have carefully crafted over the last three decades. This has been a huge disappointment for me. Members will be discussing next steps on how to diversify our forests and wood species at our AGM on 28th April. Farm Forestry Timbers will be a crucial platform going forward in the campaign to reintroduce natural durability and equity into practical applications for wood via diversifying timbers used in the building code.
