JOHN H SIMMONS

<<Back to NZFFA member nominees

I accept the nomination for a position on the Forest Growers Levy Trust Board with pleasure and anticipation. I am a forest grower, NZFFA member since the early 1980's, and secretary of Waikato Branch.

The small grower category has 2 members on the Board of 7 so it is essential these two members can well represent and deliver appropriate outcomes for the small growers.

The Levy fund is estimated at $7m per year, with a priority investment into industry good research.

From involvement in the Future Forest research consortium I have a good appreciation of what research capability can deliver.

My philosophy is that we do not require a levy bureaucracy, and all services need to be contracted to the most cost effective providers. I will be particularly focussing on the Trust providing for balanced research projects that assist the small growers with species selection, marketing a scattered and diverse resource and protecting our investment base.

Born and raised in Canterbury graduating B.Agr.Sc. Lincoln College, I developed an early interest in trees going on to develop both NZ and Australian forest interests, and am currently director of two NZ forestry companies.

Having a background career in Waikato regional government with considerable experience in governance, performance based contracting and accountability I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the Trust Board.

Your support for my nomination will assure accountability, value for money and outcomes that will benefit the whole industry. NZ small growers hold almost one third of the forest resource - you deserve representation that will provide maximum support to our tree growing efforts.

Voting closes at 5.00pm on 22 November 2013
